Nursing home converts TV lounge into Christmas grotto
December 12, 2011
CHILDHOOD memories have been revived for residents at a New Forest nursing home who now have their very own Christmas grotto.
Handyman Simon Woodland spent two weeks converting a TV lounge at Colten Care’s Woodpeckers home in Brockenhurst into the seasonal attraction.
The outside of the grotto is decorated with Christmas lanterns while the inside boasts a full-size Santa sleigh, a Christmas tree and an armchair for Father Christmas.
“The residents seem to really like the grotto,” said Simon who has worked at the home since 2006.
He added: “I like to do something a bit different each Christmas. Last year I built a sleigh, this year is the grotto and who knows what it will be next year.”
Manager Jacqueline Reddell said Simon had done “a great job.”
“Our residents love the new addition to their home. It brings back a lot of happy childhood memories,” she said,
“We’ll have a real-life Santa in the grotto on Christmas Day, handing out presents. It promises to be a lot of fun.”
