Hannah brings touch of animal magic to Colten Care nursing home
January 11, 2012
A TRADITIONAL Viking cattle dog was the star attraction on a pre-Xmas tour of Colten Care’s Amberwood House nursing home in Ferndown.
Hannah, a rare three-year-old Swedish vallhund or herding dog, met residents at the 55-bed home on a trip organised by Bournemouth voluntary group Caring Canines.
It was part of a fortnightly series of visits from temperament-tested dogs designed to help people who miss animal companionship.
Colten Care activity organiser Jan Burns said: “Many of our residents used to have pets when they were younger and the visits from Caring Canines rekindle much happiness.
“Having the chance to meet and play with a well trained animal is really appreciated by those who may be confined to bed or who can’t communicate easily with other people.”
Vallhunds, a breed whose origins go back more than 1,000 years, are sometimes referred to as ‘the little cattle dog of the Vikings’.
Their intelligence and even temperament make them suitable as both working dogs and companion pets.
Joining Hannah on her visit were Councillor John Muggleton, Mayor of Ferndown, Sue Dennett, co-founder of Caring Canines, and volunteer Stephanie Bradshaw.
