Colten Care MD helps puppy dog Hudson learn new tricks
January 13, 2012
HUDSON the puppy met a fellow top dog when he visited his human namesake at Colten Care’s Avon Cliff nursing home in Bournemouth.
The five-month-old golden retriever was named after Ian Hudson, Managing Director of the care home provider, which sponsors his training as an assistance dog for the disabled.
Staff and residents at the home picked the name when they chose the Verwood voluntary group Woofability as their main charity for 2011.
Woofability provides specially trained assistance dogs which help disabled people with practical tasks such as getting dressed, emptying the washing machine and picking up the post.
The dogs can even tell if a person is about to have an epileptic fit and are trained to raise an alert.
As well as supporting Hudson’s training over the next two years, Avon Cliff has raised more than £800 for Woofability through coffee mornings and craft and cake fairs.
Jenny Clarke, co-founder of Woofability, said: “The support from Colten Care is helping us make a real difference to people’s lives across Dorset, Hampshire and south Wiltshire.
“We have 37 dogs in training at the moment. All are chosen for their even temperament and they are appreciated by everyone from autistic children to people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia.”
Mr Hudson said: “It was an honour to meet my canine namesake face to face. There must be very few MDs who can claim to have a dog named after them even if they are known for barking out orders!
“Woofability shares our goal of providing quality care for people and helping them live as independently as possible.”
