Local care home resident reaches final of prestigious National Care Awards

Fred Day, a resident of Abbotts’ Barton Care Home in Winchester, part of the Colten Care family of care homes,  has reached the finals of the National Care Awards, due to take place in London at the end of November.
Fred, who, after spending 25 years as a policeman with Hampshire Constabulary moved into Abbotts Barton Care Home in 2004, was nominated in the category for ‘Best Resident or Relative Contribution.’  On hearing that he had reached the finals, which encompasses more than 20,000 care homes throughout England, Fred  said ‘I was a bit shocked to reach the finals, these are very prestigious awards and it was very pleasing to just be nominated in the first place’
Unfortunately, due to ill-health, Fred was unable to attend the interviews for the finalists held recently in London, but in a great example of how innovation can be used in care homes, he actually conducted his ‘face-to-face’ interview with the judges using a webcam over the internet!
Denise Smyth, who is the home manager at Abbotts Barton, said that ‘Fred is one of those residents who really does contribute to the home and light up everyone’s day.  He is actively involved in running ‘his home’ and through his involvement, even got us to change the flavour sausages we serve!  I was very pleased to be able to nominate him for these awards.’
The finals of the awards are due to take place at London’s Hilton Metropole Hotel where Fred will be represented by Denise- fingers crossed for him!
