SUN SPA FOR THE ELDERLY

June 08, 2011

Elderly residents at a care home in Lymington, Hampshire, are among the first in the UK to benefit from safe, daily doses of sun therapy, since the launch of a new therapeutic sun room at Colten Care’s, Belmore Lodge.

Residents are looking forward to taking advantage of the new facility, which offers them the opportunity to relax, unwind and escape the British weather and enjoy a healthy dose of sunlight which in turn delivers health benefits.

TV’s famous health expert Dr. Hilary Jones, opened the new facility to residents, local health care professionals and family members and announced that he has already put his name down for a room in a Colten Care home.

He said: “Colten Care deliver the best standards in care for all their residents, their staff all have smiles on their faces and the constant improvements and activities being implemented across the group just goes to show how dedicated they are to care.

“This new multi-sensory ‘sun spa’ adds a new dimension to the welfare of the elderly. This therapy brings relief and comfort to patients’ aches and pains and can help provide a boost to their immune system at the same time. At least one simulated sun session a week will provide residents with all the sun’s proven health benefits which aid sleep, relaxation and promote an increase in energy.”

Ian Hudson, managing director, at Colten Care said: “We aim to provide our residents with the highest standards of care in comfortable, pleasant and well-maintained surroundings. The launch of Colten Cove further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to improving the living environment for our residents.”

“Powerful lights fully replicate natural sunlight and by just spending one hour in the therapy room residents can experience the benefits of sun therapy, which include; treatment against Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), stimulated Vitamin D production, increased blood circulation and boosts to the immune system.”

Resident, Amy Clarke, 97, said: “This is really something, it is like being on holiday all year round.”

The Real Sunlight technology used at Colten Cove offers the full spectrum of light filtered to provide a reduced and safer level of Ultra Violet ray. One hour in the sunlight gives residents the same amount of Ultra Violet exposure as they would get from spending 15 to 20 minutes outside on an average sunny summers day.

The temperature in Colten Cove is set at 25 degrees, whilst a fan simulates a light breeze. It is possible to adjust the light programmer to re-create sun-rise, full daylight and sunset. Residents can also choose from three different light settings, transporting them to Miami, Mauritius or Bali.

Ian Hudson continued: “The introduction of Colten Cove at Belmore Lodge is part of our ongoing commitment to further develop and improve our care, ensuring the living spaces we create suit the changing needs of our residents. The pilot trial of Colten Cove was a huge success and we are anticipating introducing Colten Cove in several of our other homes.”
