Poetry and Portraits: A Creative Afternoon at Abbey View
Poetry Day at Abbey View brought residents together to enjoy an afternoon of creativity, self-expression and shared interests.
A highlight of the day was the sharing of an original poem by resident Jennifer (Jen) Newcombe, written about Abbey View’s therapy dog, Bramble. As well as writing the poem, Jen expressed a wish for a picture of Bramble to be displayed in the home. In response, the team arranged for a painted portrait of Bramble to be commissioned and unveiled during the event.
Jen was the first to view the finished piece and recited her poem, Bramble’s World, to mark the occasion. She was joined by Head Administrator Emma Gale, who posed with both Bramble and the portrait.
The event also included a workshop led by guest Jan Millward. A number of residents took part, with many now working on their own poetry. Jan will return on World Art Day, 15 April, for a follow-up session.
Bramble’s World
By Jennifer Newcombe
Her love is unconditional
A tiny bit of chicken is all that is required
Big brown eyes and glossy coat
Leave much to be desiredShe treats everyone as equal
And wags her handsome tail
If we were as innocent
More good things would prevailThe wars and fighting soon would stop
New friendships would be made
Putin and Trump would soon step down
New memories would be laidFamilies can unite again
And prisoners will be freed
Food will grow abundantly
No shortages or needWater clear and clean will flow
Storms and floods abate
The sun will shine, a gentle breeze
When we reach the Pearly GateBest wishes, Bramble
