A Purr-fect Outing: Care Team Makes Resident’s Wish Come True

A group of residents from Abbotts Barton in Winchester recently enjoyed a heart warming visit to a local cat café in Romsey, fulfilling a personal wish for resident Barry Baker, who had shared how much he missed the companionship of his cat after moving into the home.

Barry had spoken fondly of his beloved pet, expressing sadness at having to leave the cat behind — though he took comfort in knowing it had been adopted by the new owners of his house. When he mentioned how much he would love to spend time with a cat again, staff quickly set plans in motion to make it happen.

Companionship Team Leader Sarah Kingston said the idea resonated with other residents as well. “We have quite a few animal lovers here, so it turned into a lovely group outing.”

Residents travelled by minibus to the Romsey Cat Café, where they spent a relaxed afternoon among the café’s eight resident rescue cats. The space, filled with climbing frames, cosy corners, and cat trees, provided a welcoming setting.

Guests enjoyed cream teas and cakes while reading about the individual stories of the cats. “They’re so friendly and full of life — it was inspiring to see how well they have adapted to their new life following individual hardships,” one resident noted.

Barry, who was particularly moved by the visit, said: “It was wonderful to be in the presence of a cat again. They are so peaceful.”

The outing is one of several recent initiatives designed to respond to residents’ personal stories and interests.

“This wasn’t just about going out for the day,” said Sarah. “It was about listening to Barry, understanding what matters to him, and creating a meaningful experience around that. Those small things can make a real difference.”
