Photography Project Brings Memories to Life for Abbotts Barton Residents

Residents at Abbotts Barton care home in Winchester have been taking part in a unique photography project that captures personal memories of Hampshire landscapes, thanks to the work of local mature student Alison.

As part of her final year submission for an HND in Photography, Alison has spent time with residents, listening to their recollections of places in the region that hold special meaning. Inspired by these conversations, she has produced a collection of framed photographs featuring local scenery, wildlife, and landmarks, now displayed throughout the home.

“These images have sparked real emotion among our residents,” said Sarah, Companionship Team Leader at Abbotts Barton. “They’re not just pictures – they’re powerful reminders of home, family and cherished moments. It’s been a wonderful project to be part of.”

One particularly moving story came from resident Mary, who spoke with Alison about the day her late husband Roly proposed to her in a quiet Winchester alley beside St Michael’s Church. Alison sought out the location and captured it in a tranquil black-and-white photograph.

“When Mary saw the image, she was overwhelmed,” Sarah said. “She instantly recognised the scene and said through tears, ‘It’s perfect. It’s exactly how I remember it.’”

Another resident, Betty Perry, shared memories of retiring to the village of Hursley, just outside Winchester. Alison photographed the village shop and butcher near Betty’s former home.

“That’s where we lived,” Betty said upon seeing the picture. “I would love to have that on my bedroom wall.”

As well as gifting the framed photographs to residents for their rooms, Alison has also created greeting cards using some of the images. These will be sold in support of charity at the home’s upcoming summer fete, where Alison has volunteered to run the stall herself and donated additional framed prints for sale.
