Abbotts Barton Celebrates Six Centenarians

Abbotts Barton Care Home hosted a Centenarian Cream Tea to celebrate six of its residents who have reached the milestone of 100 years or more. The event featured chintzy cake stands filled with scones, jam, and clotted cream, creating a traditional and festive atmosphere.

Residents Chloe, Arthur, Russell, Betty, Ian, and Marjorie were joined by their families and students from Winchester College. The students spent time speaking with each centenarian, discovering stories from their lives and learning about the experiences that have shaped a century.

Ian shared his service during World War II with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, including commanding a troop transport ship to India. Betty spoke about running a hairdressing and beauty salon with her husband, while Marjorie reflected on witnessing five different monarchs during her lifetime.

Russell recounted his career as a headmaster in both the UK and Canada, and Chloe discussed her work in Social Services and the evolving role of women in the workplace. Arthur impressed with tales of his weekly visits to Winchester Tennis Club.

Each centenarian was presented with a penny farthing minted in the year of their birth as a keepsake to mark the occasion. The event was lively and warm, filled with conversation, laughter, and celebration.

Companionship Team Leader Sarah said, “It was a real privilege to spend time with our centenarians and hear their stories. Their energy, experiences, and outlook on life were inspiring, and the students loved the opportunity to learn from them first-hand.”

As the afternoon concluded, Ian summed up the sentiment of the day, telling his daughter, “I had a lovely time and really enjoyed it. You said I would, and were right as usual!”
