Abbotts Barton Residents Explore the Future of Transport

Residents recently enjoyed an insightful afternoon at the Insta-Volt EV Charging Station on the outskirts of Winchester, following a trip to the Great Western Railway Museum in Swindon earlier this year.

While the museum highlighted the engineering feats of the steam locomotive era, this visit offered a glimpse into the cutting-edge technology shaping the future of transport.

Neil, one of the directors at Insta-Volt and project manager for the Winchester station, explained how the facility’s solar panels generate and store power in an integrated energy storage system, reducing reliance on the National Grid during summer months.

Residents were also given a close-up look at the inner workings of one of the electric vehicle charging stations.

Alan, a retired civil engineer, was captivated by the demonstration. “It was all so interesting, but the highlight for me was when Neil opened the front of the charging station and explained how everything worked,” he said.

“The visit offered residents a unique opportunity to compare historical and modern transport technologies,” added Companionship Team Leader Sarah. “It sparked conversation about engineering, sustainability, and the evolution of travel over the centuries.”
