Abbotts Barton Residents Celebrate VE Day

Residents, families and team members at Abbotts Barton came together to mark VE Day with a 1940s-themed afternoon tea, complete with live music, vintage decorations and shared memories of the end of the Second World War.

The home’s dining space was transformed to recreate the atmosphere of a traditional street party, with bunting, vintage china and ration books helping to set the scene.

Residents welcomed friends and relatives for the occasion, enjoying afternoon tea while singer Hannah Bushnell performed a selection of well-known wartime songs.

Classics including The White Cliffs of Dover, We’ll Meet Again and It’s a Long Way to Tipperary prompted conversation and reflection, with many residents sharing their own memories of the era. Team members also embraced the theme, dressing in period-inspired clothing for the celebration.

Among those reflecting on VE Day were resident centenarians Betty and Marjorie, both of whom remember the end of the war.

Betty said: “It was a time of celebration and hope. I was newly married and looking forward to the future.”

Marjorie recalled: “When I heard The White Cliffs of Dover, so many memories came back – some bitter, some sweet. I remember going to the fun fair on Clarence Pier with some young lads, and walking around with a pillow on my head because I thought it would protect me from the doodlebugs!”

Companion Team Leader Sarah said: “VE Day remains an important occasion for many of our residents. It was wonderful to create an opportunity for people to come together, enjoy the music and share personal memories with family and friends.”
