Exploring History at Whitchurch Silk Mill

7 January 2026

Residents enjoyed a fascinating trip to Whitchurch Silk Mill, a historic site on the River Test where silk weaving has taken place since 1830.

Janie and Alan were captivated by the large undershot waterwheel, which has powered the mill for over 200 years. During the self-guided tour, they spoke with volunteers and watched skilled weavers at work. After exploring the mill, the group relaxed in the riverside café over tea and cake.

Alan remarked on the skill and dedication of the team, while Janie admired the hand-finished scarves, noting that many pieces from the mill have even featured in period dramas such as Pride & Prejudice.
