Winchester Cathedral Tour

25 February 2026

Our residents were treated to a fascinating guided tour of Winchester Cathedral, kindly arranged through the Winchester Rotary Club.

The highlight was learning about a 500-year-old mystery: during the Civil War, the tombs of Saxon kings were disturbed, and the bones were scattered.

Recent scientific work, using carbon dating, strontium analysis, and DNA testing, has enabled the bones to be reassembled — revealing two previously unknown skeletons. Residents were captivated by the story, and Mary, a former volunteer and guide for 47 years, was particularly impressed, saying, “I wasn’t aware that science had advanced to such an extent. It’s wonderful that we will finally know the identity of these ancient kings.”
