Amberwood House swings into International Jazz Day

30 April 2025

Residents, relatives, and guests at Amberwood House in Ferndown were treated to an evening of smooth melodies and timeless elegance as the care home hosted a special celebration for International Jazz Day.

The event, which welcomed members of the local community alongside families of residents, was organised by the team at Amberwood House with the aim of honouring jazz’s rich musical heritage in a relaxed and stylish setting.

Thanks to Companion Nicky Stevens – herself a former member of the chart-topping group Brotherhood of Man – the evening featured live performances from a professional jazz duo, who filled the home with mellow vocals, rich piano tones and the distinctive rhythm of double bass.

“Our residents really enjoy live music, and jazz lends itself so well to creating a warm, atmospheric evening,” said Nicky. “It was lovely to see everyone so engaged, smiling, and just enjoying the moment.”

The kitchen team laid on a sophisticated spread of charcuterie and cheeses, accompanied by wine for those who wished to indulge, while diners enjoyed their evening meal to the backdrop of gently swinging jazz.

Adding a personal touch to the evening, Nicky joined the performers on stage for a few songs, much to the delight of the audience. Residents Shirley and Margaret later chatted with the band about their musical background and their longstanding connection with Nicky, taking the opportunity for photographs before the night drew to a close.

The event is one of many regular cultural and musical occasions at Amberwood House, all designed to support wellbeing and bring the local community together.
