Amberwood House Celebrates Margery’s 103rd Birthday in Style

There were smiles, stories, and even a secret to long life as Amberwood House in Ferndown marked a very special milestone.
Much‑loved resident Margery Haynes turned 103 and shared her recipe for a happy life: “Being a good girl, eating Oxo cubes and beef, and enjoying life.”
The celebration included a homemade birthday cake, laughter with fellow residents, and plenty of memories. Born in the West Midlands, Margery moved to Bournemouth with her husband Harry after many seaside holidays. Together they spent years cycling to the beach, swimming, picnicking, and dancing, Harry always making sure Margery had a beautiful frock for each occasion.
During the war, she worked in a factory and later supported Harry’s career while caring for her mother. Today, she’s the one spreading joy.
Home Manager Di Nicholls said: “Margery makes us laugh every day with her jokes and her happy outlook. When we asked if there’s anything she wishes she’d done in life, she simply said she’s content, though she does wish she’d been clever and brave.”
