Residents Compete for Victory in Scrabble Tourney

4 May 2026

Residents from two Dorset care homes came together for a friendly day of competitive fun with Scrabble.

Amberwood House in Ferndown hosted a visit by players from fellow Colten Care home Bourne View in Poole.

Each home fielded two teams each, with all involved hoping to claim victory.

Maddee, Companionship Team Leader for the hosts, said: “After some closely contested rounds, Amberwood House came out on top on this occasion.

“However, special recognition goes to Reg from Bourne view, who achieved the highest-scoring word of the day with an impressive 40 points.

“After the games, everyone refuelled and relaxed with some delicious cakes prepared by our chefs, rounding off a fun and sociable event for all.”

Reg said: “It was a great chance to get together, challenge the mind and enjoy some friendly competition.”

The event was inspired by National Scrabble Day, celebrated annually in honour of the game’s creator, an American architect called Alfred Mosher Butts who was born in 1899 and came up with his popular invention in 1938.

As well as Amberwood House and Bourne View, inter-home matches have been held previously involving Colten Care’s Woodpeckers in Brockenhurst and Avon Cliff in Bournemouth.
