Avon Reach Wins Christchurch Carnival with Wonka-Themed Parade

Residents, families, and team members from our Christchurch home, Avon Reach, were at the heart of the fun at this year’s Christchurch Carnival—and we’re proud to share that our entry won Best Parade Entry.

Themed around Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, our parade group transformed the Avon Reach minibus into a vibrant Wonka-inspired float.

Golden tickets, colourful sweets, and handmade decorations brought the classic Roald Dahl story to life.

Residents and team members dressed as Willy Wonka, Veruca Salt, and Oompa-Loompas, with one young supporter, Colby, even driving his very own mini electric pick-up truck styled to match the theme.

“It was a wonderful day filled with music, laughter, and a fantastic sense of community spirit,” said Companionship Team Leader, Denise. “Seeing the smiles on residents’ faces as we joined in the parade was a highlight in itself. Winning the prize was the icing on the cake.”

Adding to the fun, resident Pat, dressed as Willy Wonka, and Home Manager Ruth, as an Oompa-Loompa, surprised the crowd by awarding a golden ticket to one lucky spectator, who walked away with a chocolate hamper.

At the closing ceremony by Christchurch Quay, Avon Reach was announced as the winner, receiving a £100 prize and the winner’s shield. In a touching gesture, our residents decided the prize money should go to our charity of the year, the Christchurch Community Partnership, supporting vital work in the local area.

Pat summed up the day beautifully: “We had a wonderful time, and to be named winners at the end was just fantastic.”
