Eric’s Story at Avon Reach

“At first, it was a big change for him. He was understandably unsure, but he was given time, shown around properly, and helped to settle in at his own pace.

“One small thing that made a real difference was being able to bring his electric recliner chair with him from the flat – something he was very attached to and still uses every day.

“Once he was in, he settled far more quickly than we expected. He’s eating well, looks healthier, and feels comfortable in his surroundings. The chef took time to talk to him about his preferences, and little things – like always having mango juice, which he enjoys – have helped him feel at home.

“What has given us the greatest peace of mind is the level of care and support around him. Eric has his favourite carers and knowing that professional nursing support is available has been hugely reassuring. On one occasion when he felt unwell, a nurse acted immediately and arranged antibiotics straight away.

“That kind of response removes a lot of worry for the family.

“For other families going through this, my advice would be to take your time and trust what feels right. A proper visit makes a real difference – talking to the team, seeing how people are cared for, and noticing how the home feels when you’re there. Trying respite first helped us and gave Eric the space to decide in his own way.

Although the stay began as respite, Eric soon decided he didn’t want to return to his flat. He’s now very settled at Avon Reach and pleased to call it home. Seeing him comfortable and well cared for has made all the difference to us.”
