Reg’s Flying Wish Takes Off

15 October 2025

A lifelong love of aircraft recently took centre stage for Reg, a resident at Belmore Lodge, when his heartfelt wish to experience flying again came true with a special trip to The Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Museum – including a chance to ‘take to the skies’ in a military jet flight simulator.

During a one-to-one reminiscence session, Reg spoke fondly about his passion for military planes and his dream of taking to the skies once more. Keen to make it happen, Companionship Team Leader Sharon set about organising the perfect day – one that would allow Reg to relive the thrill of flight in the safest way possible.

The team got in touch with the Farnborough Aviation Museum, which houses a military jet flight simulator among its many fascinating exhibits. The museum’s volunteers kindly opened the venue exclusively for Reg and a fellow aviation enthusiast, Ian, to enjoy a private visit away from the usual weekend crowds.

The day began with a guided tour of the museum’s impressive collection, including a stunning replica of the first plane ever flown. Reg was captivated by the displays, recalling his own memories of flight and his admiration for the skill and engineering behind military aircraft.

The highlight came when Reg climbed into the jet simulator cockpit, ready to take the controls. With a big smile on his face, he experienced the thrill of navigating through the clouds once again – a moment that, as Sharon described, “was pure joy to witness.”

“Reg has such a love for aviation, and it was wonderful to see him so engaged and excited,” said Sharon. “He was absolutely beaming afterwards – it really meant the world to him.”

Fellow resident Ian also enjoyed the simulator experience, laughing as he ‘crashed’ in the same spot each time, joking that his son, a former RAF member, would have words about his flying skills.

The visit ended with tea and cake while the group chatted with the museum’s volunteers, who went above and beyond to make the afternoon truly special.

Both Reg and Ian agreed the visit was a brilliant experience they won’t forget in a hurry – proving that it’s never too late to let your dreams take flight.
