Sailing Memories Mark Paul’s 103rd Birthday

30 January 2026

A thoughtfully planned visit to the Royal Lymington Yacht Club created a deeply meaningful birthday celebration for Belmore Lodge resident Paul, who marked his 103rd year with a return to a place closely tied to his lifelong love of sailing.

The idea for the visit followed an earlier trip to Lymington Lifeboat Station on Emergency Services Day, when residents delivered homemade treats as a gesture of thanks.

While there, Paul spent time looking out over the yachts and boats in the harbour and shared memories of his sailing days, including his former membership at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club and voyages around France, Europe, Cornwall, and the Scilly Isles.

With Paul’s 103rd birthday approaching, the team set about organising a return visit to the club. Although refurbishment works meant the celebration could not take place on the day itself, it was arranged as soon as the club reopened.

Paul was joined by Companionship Team Leader Sharon, Home Manager Janie, and fellow resident and sailing enthusiast Louisa, who also had longstanding connections to the club.

Travelling with Driving Miss Daisy, the group received a warm welcome on arrival, with staff and members recognising Paul and stopping to chat.

Over a traditional Friday lunch of fish and chips and a celebratory glass of wine, Paul and Louisa shared stories of sailing adventures and maritime life, including Louisa’s involvement in early supply trips to the Needles Lighthouse.

To mark the occasion, the home’s chef prepared a nautical-themed cake, which was presented to Paul alongside a commemorative centenary book celebrating the yacht club’s history, with a copy also gifted to Louisa.

The visit offered a powerful opportunity for reminiscence, connection and celebration, creating a birthday experience rooted in personal history and shared joy — a fitting way to honour Paul’s remarkable 103 years.
