103 Years Young: Margery Shares Her Secret to a Happy Life

When Margery Haynes turned 103 at Amberwood House in Ferndown, the celebration was full of laughter, stories, and one very important secret: “Being a good girl, eating Oxo cubes and beef, and enjoying life.”

As the oldest resident at the home, Margery was treated to a special birthday cake and a gathering with fellow residents and team members. Known for her quick wit and cheerful spirit, she’s a much-loved figure in the home.

Born in the West Midlands, Margery moved to Bournemouth with her husband Harry after years of holidaying on the coast. The pair were inseparable, regularly cycling to the beach, enjoying swims and picnics, and attending dances where Harry always made sure Margery had a beautiful frock to wear.

During the war, she worked in a factory, later supporting Harry’s career and caring for her mother in her final years. These days, she’s the one bringing joy to others.

Home Manager Di Nicholls said: “Margery makes us laugh every day with her jokes and her happy outlook. When we asked if there’s anything she wishes she’d done in life, she simply said she’s content – although she does wish she’d been clever and brave.”
