Marlene Meets MP for Political Chat

A resident at our Salisbury home had a wish come true when she welcomed the city’s MP for a morning of conversation.

Marlene, who lives at Braemar Lodge, was interested in a career in politics when she was younger and, while she ultimately chose a different path, has followed the work of John Glen with a keen eye since his election victory in 2010.

She asked team members at the Stratford Road home if they could arrange for him to visit, and they liaised with John’s constituency office to make it happen.

On the day, John spent time with Marlene talking about various aspects of local, national and international politics.

As they sat together on a sofa in the lounge, Marlene told the MP of her wish that she had been able to enter politics, joking that he had ‘taken her job’.

Marlene said afterwards: “It was a personable visit from a young man who was easy to talk with. He was enthusiastic and willing to talk about his job in an interesting way. The visit worked out well, it was very pleasant.”

As well as meeting Marlene, John spoke with several other residents and team members including Clinical Lead Zodwa.

He was also given a tour round the home’s new extension and recently refurbished areas.

Companionship Team member Kelly Bartlett said: “Marlene was very much looking forward to meeting him and discussing various topics of interest. He talked about his life and how he came to be a politician, becoming the local MP in 2010. He shared details of his different roles in government and opposition over the years.

“Residents learned how he divides his time between London and Salisbury, and how he keeps in touch with constituents here through events, surgeries, visits, talks and simply being around the city, particularly on our Saturday market day.

“The morning was a wonderful way for residents to further engage with local and countrywide politics, for Marlene to have her wish granted, and for our local MP to see our newly extended home.”

The 18-year-old home has undergone a huge project of refurbishment this year coupled with the completion and opening of the extension, taking the overall number of bedrooms to 95.

Activity on the extension began nearly three years ago with groundwork, construction and fit-out led by Colten Care’s sister company Colten Developments.

Around 30 sub-contractor companies, employing more than 250 tradespeople, were engaged on the project, helping with local job creation.

The extension is split over three floors, including a garden floor, and extends to 2,700 sq m or 29,052 sq ft.

As well as ensuite bedrooms, there are training and staff rooms and a second-floor guest suite. The main entrance and reception area are accessed from road level.

October 2025 saw an official opening by The Mayor of Salisbury, Councillor John Wells, who said its “facilities of the highest quality…enhance a strong sense of comfort and care”.

Elvis Tribute Show Wows Whitecliffe

A top Elvis tribute artist had one of our Dorset homes rockin’ n rollin’ as team members did their bit to make a resident’s heartfelt wish come true.

Catherine, 81, told staff at Whitecliffe House in Blandford that she would have loved to see Presley sing live.

While they couldn’t quite bring back the King himself, the home’s Companionship team did the next best thing by inviting professional impersonator Martin Fox to perform.

Companionship Team Leader Sarah said: “Martin arrived with all the charm and flair of Elvis. Before his performance, he took time to visit the residents and proudly showed them an authentic Elvis belt, a piece of memorabilia from one of the legend’s real shows. That touch immediately sparked excitement and set the tone for a memorable afternoon.”

The show wowed Catherine and fellow residents who tapped their feet, clapped hands and sang along.

Sarah added: “After a lively 45-minute first half, Martin took a short break. It gave Catherine the chance to meet him in person, get a photo and even sneak a little kiss, much to her delight. The joy was infectious, with smiles around the entire room.”

Catherine, who moved to Whitecliffe House in June 2025, said: “The show really made my day, seeing him sing in person. And I very much liked the cheeky kiss.”

Renowned as one of Britain’s leading Elvis impersonators, Shaftesbury-based Martin makes regular appearances at parties, festivals and events across the country and internationally, performing songs from all stages of Presley’s career.

Reflecting on his visit to Whitecliffe House, Martin said: “There was lots of interaction and I think the residents enjoyed it. Catherine certainly did. She is such a fan. I gave her one of the scarves I wear on stage. Elvis is the right era for those of her age. The set ranged from Heartbreak Hotel, recorded in 1956, right through to the power ballads of his Vegas years in the 1970s.”

Dotty Returns Behind The Counter

Resident Dotty, a former department store sales assistant, ‘came out of retirement’ for a morning when our Bournemouth home, Avon Cliff, arranged for her to volunteer at a cancer charity shop.

Dotty, 89, who lives at Avon Cliff, was ‘in her element once again’ as she served customers at Wessex Cancer Support in Poole Road, Westbourne.

Dotty spent her whole career in retail, working for many years at the now-closed Beales store in Bournemouth and at the shoe shop Dolcis.

She didn’t need to be asked twice when Colten Companion Elise Martin suggested she might like the chance to relive her retail days.

Elise knew that Dotty loved her career, has a personal connection with Wessex Cancer Support and had been thrilled when Avon Cliff residents chose it as the home’s charity for this year.

Having made the necessary arrangements with Wessex Cancer Support’s Alina, Retail Area Manager, and Hannah, Head of Volunteering and Training, Elise accompanied Dotty on a minibus trip to the shop.

“We spent the morning there with Alina and Hannah, and Dotty was soon back into the swing of things,” said Elise. “First, they invited her to check all the coat hangers were correctly labelled and looking neat. Then, under their guidance, she had a stint behind the till serving customers. Of course, she couldn’t resist a little browse on the job and even used her sales skills to convince me to buy a lovely winter coat. Dotty chatted with customers throughout the morning, helping one lady choose accessories to go with her new dress.”

Elise added: “Seeing Dotty in her element once again while doing something for a great cause was truly heartwarming. She relished the chance to be out in the community giving back to the charity we have been fundraising for this year. It was the best example of ‘retail therapy’, such a valuable experience.”
Dotty said: “Being here doing this again made me quite emotional. I forgot how much I love it. There is something about helping a customer put an outfit together that makes me feel great. Being back in this environment was unexpected but so brilliant and I am happy I can still do it.”

Alina said: “It was lovely to meet Dotty, welcome her to the shop and enable her to rekindle her retail skills. We’re so happy she enjoyed the experience and had fun.”

Alina’s comments were echoed by Hannah who said: “Much of what we do in our shop activities relies on volunteers and Dotty certainly provided excellent support.”

Opened in March 2024, Wessex Cancer Support’s Westbourne shop sells clothing, bric-a-brac and household items. It is the charity’s only Dorset shop, with four others in Hampshire and one on the Isle of Wight.

Wessex Cancer Support is dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by cancer. From professional counselling, complementary therapies, activities, support groups and courses, the charity offers a range of free wellbeing and support services for people in Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Abbotts Barton Celebrates 100th Birthday With Surprise Guest

A surprise guest trotted in to help a great-great grandmother celebrate her 100th birthday at a Hampshire care home.

Chloe was naturally the centre of attention as family and friends joined her for a party at Abbotts Barton in Winchester.

And staff at the Worthy Road home secretly arranged a further special treat having heard Chloe recount fond girlhood memories of owning a pony called Jenny and going for rides in the 1930s.

Ahead of the big day, they contacted a nearby stables who were only too pleased to bring in one of their ponies, Freddie, to meet Chloe face to face and enjoy time together.
“I didn’t expect a treat like this,” a delighted Chloe told staff when Freddie arrived. “You always go that bit further in everything you do for me.”

Companionship Team Leader Sarah Kingston said: “When Chloe was 13 and living in Dorset, she had her own pony called Jenny. As an adult she was too busy bringing up her children to make time for riding, but she has always fondly remembered her days with Jenny.

“Freddie is a Welsh pony and a little smaller than Jenny was. Chloe spent time feeding him apples and giving him lots of attention. She was completely surprised that we had arranged a special treat for her and so pleased.

“When she was very young, Chloe’s favourite toy, given to her by her grandfather, was a rocking horse because it was the next best thing to a real horse.

“A year after the family moved to Witchampton in Dorset when she was 12, she was given Jenny who she loved. She would ride the pony across the open fields from Wimborne to Blandford Forum.”

After leaving school, Chloe went on to marry and have four daughters: Nicola, Jacquie, Pippa, and Pennie. She now has ten grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Outside family life, Chloe trained as a shorthand typist and worked in the social services department at Winchester County Council until she retired.

She lived in a bungalow at Harestock, creating and tending a garden of colourful shrubs and enjoying hobbies such as country dancing and watercolour painting.

The birthday celebration featured lunch and a cake specially baked and decorated by Abbotts Barton’s chefs.

Present for the occasion were Chloe’s daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and there were also video calls with family members in Australia.

In a joint note to the team at Abbotts Barton ahead of the birthday, Chloe’s family wrote: “Chloe has been a rock in all our lives, setting an example of how to always put others before yourself and we have all loved and appreciated having her in our lives for so long.”

Chloe is one of four centenarians living at Abbotts Barton. The others are Betty, 105, Russell, 101, and Ian, 100.

St Catherines View Resident John Celebrates 75th With Campervan Road Trip

St Catherines View resident, John, has his birthday wish came true when staff at his Hampshire dementia care home arranged for him to go on a much-wanted road trip in a VW campervan.

John celebrated his 75th birthday in the fresh air of the New Forest after journeying from Colten Care’s Winchester home.

Along with fellow passengers – his wife Veronica and the home’s Companionship Team Leader Laura Sheldrake – John was able to sit back and enjoy the ride to and from Whitefield Moor near Brockenhurst.

Once there, he took in the countryside views and, with the side door open, had a picnic with Veronica as they sat together.

He also took a short stroll through the heathland at a respectful distance from the New Forest donkeys.

Laura decided to organise the day for him when Veronica explained it was a long-held dream of the couple to enjoy a campervan experience, but they had never got round to making it happen before.

Laura contacted Southampton-based vehicle hire firm Hi-Profile Limousines, who have a campervan available for use as one of their vehicle options for weddings.

Driver Garry Greenwood from the firm acted as chauffeur for the trip.

“It was a wonderful day,” said Veronica. “We always wanted to own a VW campervan and go travelling. Unfortunately, we were unable to do this, so it was very special to be able to have this lovely trip together to celebrate John’s 75th. A huge thank-you goes to Laura and to Hi-Profile Limousines. Garry, our driver, was brilliant and very friendly.”

Born in south London, John moved to Winchester in 1974 and worked for Hampshire County Council for 34 years as a senior town planner.

As well as the campervan trip, he welcomed his two children and two grandchildren for a celebratory birthday tea party at St Catherines View.
Laura said: “It was a pleasure and privilege to enable John and Veronica to go on the road and enjoy the VW campervan experience they have always wanted.”
John Blandford, owner of Hi-Profile Limousines, said: “We were only too happy to help this gentleman after we heard he really wanted to go out in the campervan.”

Court Lodge Resident Reunites with Family Turkey Farm in Boldre

Residents and staff from Court Lodge enjoyed a heartfelt trip to Boldre this week as Jack revisited the turkey farm once run by his family.
The farm, now managed by Jack’s son Paul, holds a deep personal significance for him, and the visit offered a unique opportunity to reflect on a lifetime of hard work and family legacy.
Upon arrival, Jack was visibly moved, taking in the familiar sights, sounds, and colours of the farm. “It felt like stepping back in time,” he said, greeting the turkeys as old friends. Residents and staff were welcomed warmly by Jack’s family, sharing stories, laughter, and a few emotional moments.

With over 4,000 turkeys on the farm, Jack enjoyed pointing out details about the birds and reflecting on how the farm has grown and thrived over the years.

Companionship Team Leader Julie said, “It was a privilege to see Jack reconnect with a place so important to him. Moments like this are what make our work so meaningful.”

Home Manager Rebecca added, “Visiting the farm was more than just a trip down memory lane—it was a celebration of family, hard work, and the connections we carry with us throughout life.”
The visit provided a joyful and reflective afternoon, demonstrating the impact of revisiting places filled with personal history and the enduring bonds of family and community.

Premier League Day Out for The Aldbury Residents and Ex-Players

A pair of ex-footballers watched a south coast derby at a former club in a visit co-ordinated by The Aldbury.

The trip to AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium was a wish come true for both Barrie and Peter, residents at Colten Care’s Poole home The Aldbury.

And the final score brought added pleasure for the two lifelong Cherries fans: a 2-1 victory over visitors Brighton.

Staff at The Aldbury organised the experience in association with stadium officials after hearing of the pair’s desire to revisit the club.

Barrie was a professional footballer in the 1950s while Peter played for Bournemouth’s Under-18s youth team.

To help prepare for the outing, Barrie and Peter welcomed club historian Neil Vacher and Accessibility & Engagement Manager John Jennings to The Aldbury five days before the match.

The visitors enjoyed a cup of tea with both men and chatted about all things AFCB.

On matchday, Barrie and Peter travelled in a minibus with Colten Care Companion Melissa Siat and Driver and First Aider Paul.

The former players were delighted to have seats in the main stand right in front of the pitch so they could watch all the action.

Afterwards, Barrie said: “I am so happy and grateful. What a wonderful event. The stadium has changed a lot, looks a lot bigger now and the game was a lot faster.”

Peter said: “It was an eventful, clean game. All the goals were good. Thank you very much to Melissa for organising this unbelievable afternoon. I saw Bournemouth play many times when they were in Second Division. I never thought I’d ever get a chance to see them play in the Premier League. First rate. It was well organised.”

Melissa said: “It was a lovely experience to help Barrie and Peter revisit the stadium and see the Cherries play again. They were both very excited and enjoyed the whole match. Peter also appreciated his steak and ale pie during the break. A huge thank-you to everyone at AFC Bournemouth, including the helpful and attentive wellbeing staff, for enabling us to grant these two ex-players’ wishes.”
