Elvis tribute lights up Fernhill’s right royal rock ‘n’ roll day

A top Elvis tribute artist made a return trip to a Dorset dementia care home to help residents celebrate a ‘day of Kings’.

Thomas Gabbini made his second visit to Fernhill in Longham near Bournemouth after music fans there were wowed with his first appearance a few months ago.

The ‘King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ returned as a surprise for residents as team members marked the official birthday of King Charles III.

It wasn’t long before Elvis enthusiasts Kiki Tormey, Michele Wood and Robert Simpson were up dancing to signature tunes such as That’s All Right Mama, Blue Suede Shoes and Jailhouse Rock.

As she danced with Thomas and sang along, Michele giggled and said: “Ooh, I love Elvis, just look at those hips!”

Robert, a lifelong Elvis fan, said: “Wow, what a treat!”

To reinforce the ‘royal’ aspect of the occasion, Fernhill staff crowned Robert as their ‘King for the day’, inviting him to wear robes and a crown and sit next to a cardboard cutout of King Charles.

Companion Angela Thorn said: “Rob took the title very seriously. He sat regally on his sovereign’s throne, ready to greet his loyal subjects.”

Robert said afterwards: “What a day. Now I know what it feels like to be a King.”

Companionship Team Leader Cara Duroe said: “We knew from his performance how great Thomas is at engaging with the residents and bringing Elvis to life again. Once again he prompted so much joy and the chance to reminisce. Everyone had fun. It was a celebration fit for not just one, but two Kings!”

Reading-based Thomas has been impersonating Elvis for around ten years. He has been a top-ten finalist twice at Europe-wide awards for Elvis tribute artists.

On the performances for his Fernhill fans, he said: “They really appreciate it. It just goes to prove that rock ‘n’ roll never gets old.”
