Jane’s Arrow Still Flies True: A Court Lodge Resident Rekindles Her Love of Archery

6 August 2025

When 89-year-old Jane Cockeram shared her memories of archery with the team at Court Lodge care home in Lymington, they saw an opportunity to turn a story into something much more.

Jane, who has lived at Court Lodge for more than two years, spoke fondly of her time as a keen archer, a passion first sparked during her years living in Singapore and later nurtured in the UK as a member of the Waterside Archers.

Moved by her story, the Court Lodge team arranged for Jane to visit Sway Bowmen, a friendly and welcoming club in the heart of the New Forest, where archers of all ages come together to practise and share in the sport.

A Quiet Wish, Thoughtfully Fulfilled

Jane was accompanied on the day by Companionship Team Leader Julia Puia and Minibus Driver Dave Barron-Cook, who supported her wish to reconnect with something that once meant so much.

During her visit, Jane spent time with Chief Coach Ian Mason, sharing stories from her archery days and discussing the focus and technique that first drew her to the sport.

“I very much enjoyed the visit,” Jane said. “It was a lovely afternoon.”

To the delight of the club, Jane also donated several of her own bows – a generous gift now set to inspire a new generation of archers.

Ian said:

“It was really nice to meet Jane and talk through various aspects of archery with her. We discussed bow types, the skills you need for the sport and the different ways to shoot the arrow. She was very engaged with the subject. We had fellow archers demonstrating techniques for her.”

Life, Interests and Independence

For Julia, the visit was about more than an outing.

“It was a pleasure and privilege to help Jane rekindle her interest in archery, a hobby she enjoyed during her time living abroad and in the local community. The visit was really rewarding for her. We thank Ian and all at the club for helping us make this wish come true.”

Jane’s story is a reminder that at Court Lodge, life doesn’t slow down – it evolves. Our team listens carefully, supporting residents to rediscover the things that bring meaning, connection and joy.
