Salisbury care home hosts week of VE Day-themed activities

Our Salisbury care home has marked the 80th anniversary of victory in Europe with a week of activities and reflection.
Residents and team members at Braemar Lodge decorated their terrace room in red, white and blue for a VE Day-themed lunch and quiz.
There was live entertainment from singing duo the D-Day Dollies who performed wartime classics.
And a Trooper from the Household Cavalry came in to listen to residents’ memories of 8 May 1945.
One of those he met, 102-year-old Ula Rigg, shared stories of her time in the auxiliary fire service in Bristol and Weston-super-Mare including VE Day itself.

Ula, who was in a singing group The Shire Spots in her spare time, said she recalled being hoisted onto the top of a brick shelter and, surrounded by lots of people, led a community singsong.
“We sang We’ll Meet Again and everybody joined in,” she said. “It was a wonderful moment to think it was all over.”
As well as the week of activities at the Stratford Road home, three service veterans – residents Douglas Parish and Doreen Bowell and Home Manager Jackie Cash – also took part in the lighting of the VE Day beacon in Downton.
