Bourne View Celebrates Local Heroes

Bourne View Care Home hosted a memorable full-day event celebrating the bravery of local firefighters while exploring the fascinating history of the home and its surrounding area.

The day began with a Firefighter Tea Party in the reception area, where residents were joined by members of the Redhill Fire Crew.

Over warm drinks and homemade cakes prepared by the Bourne View kitchen team, residents shared stories and got to know the people behind the uniforms in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Residents were thrilled to see a modern fire engine up close. Crew members explained the equipment, discussed how it is used, and shared insights into how fire engines and protective gear have evolved over time. Residents enjoyed asking questions and learning more about life in the Fire Service.

In the afternoon, the focus shifted to the site’s history. The Bourne View Companionship Team collaborated with local historians from Talbot Village Trust to uncover the story of the land. The research revealed that the building was once the headquarters of local fire stations and may even have been used for training.

Going further back, the area was originally open fields belonging to Newton Farm. In the 1940s, the farm housed “The Dog Hotel – Tree Top Kennels,” remembered fondly by long-term residents who recalled hearing dogs barking as they passed.

Uncovering these layers of history brought excitement and a sense of connection for residents.

The event perfectly combined community spirit, recognition of local heroes, and a celebration of Bourne View’s unique heritage, leaving residents with lasting memories of both bravery and history.
