Indian Culture Comes Alive at Bourne View

At Bourne View, a vibrant celebration transported residents to India, honouring the lifelong connection of one special resident, Penny, who was born there and spent her early childhood immersed in its rich culture.

Though travel is no longer possible, the care home recreated the sights, sounds, and flavours of India to bring her dream to life.

The Canopy Café was transformed with colourful Indian décor, including marigold flowers, bright scarves, and traditional handkerchiefs. Soft Indian classical music played in the background, creating an authentic and calming ambience as residents gathered to take part in the festivities.

Residents participated in a hands-on activity making traditional Indian bracelets, which were tied on wrists alongside scarves, bindis, and vibrant handkerchiefs, symbolising togetherness and celebration.

Penny looked radiant in her scarf draped elegantly over her shoulder, a bindi on her forehead, and bracelet and handkerchief in place. She shared, “I love the look. I can’t explain how happy I am.”

The afternoon continued with lively dancing to Punjabi beats led by Companion Preeti, bringing energy to everyone in the room. Residents embraced the music and movement, fully immersing themselves in the celebration.

No cultural celebration would be complete without refreshments. Residents enjoyed a traditional Indian tea party, featuring Assam tea and a selection of authentic snacks.

Preeti also shared her knowledge of Indian culture, from traditions to the intricate artistry of Phulkari embroidery, sparking curiosity and appreciation among everyone present.

The day concluded with a special Indian supper, rounding off a memorable celebration full of joy, connection, and cultural discovery. For Penny, the day held deep personal significance:

“This is a very special day for me. It feels like my dream of visiting my home in India has come true.”
