National Poetry Day
National Poetry Day was an ideal opportunity to share the power of the written word.
Residents and staff decided to put together a booklet of poetry from each UK nation.
Three pieces from each nation were chosen and residents from each country volunteered to read the pieces aloud. Chris Lorimar, from Inverness, read ‘Auld Lang Sine.’ Irene Plunkett, from Ireland, read ‘I will Wear a Shamrock.’ For the work by English poets, Peter Prior read Shakespeare’s ‘Juliet’s Soliloquy,’ and Wendy Barnes read ‘Linden Lea’ by William Barnes. One of our Colten Companions invited her friend Andrea, who is from Merthyr Tydfil in the Welsh Valleys, in to read the Welsh poem ‘Warning.’
The session was fun for all to enjoy and take part in. We had a good laugh at some limericks and later, the residents reminisced about the poems they had learnt at school.
