Braemar Lodge residents make a splash at Cathedral flower festival

Residents at a New Forest care home have played a creative role in one of Salisbury Cathedral’s most vibrant events of the year – the Spirit of Water Flower Festival.
The idea was first sparked when a family member of Doreen Bowell, a resident at Colten Care’s Braemar Lodge home, brought in a flyer for the upcoming celebration. Doreen and her daughter had previously arranged flowers at the Cathedral and recalled the experience fondly, prompting staff and residents to get involved.
Residents designed and decorated bright, eye-catching fish, working alongside carers. Over several sessions, the home built up a small shoal of handmade fish, which was then sent off to the Cathedral to join contributions from schools, care homes, and community groups across the region.
Weeks later, residents made the trip to Salisbury to see the final displays. The event featured intricate floral arrangements inspired by the theme of water, with musical performances and live flower arranging demonstrations taking place throughout the day.

For the visiting residents, the standout moment was seeing their own creations on display. Thousands of fish lined a walkway more than 30 feet long and 8 feet high, forming a striking visual centrepiece; residents were able to spot their individual fish among the collective artwork.
The visit marked a proud moment for the residents and staff who helped bring a splash of creativity to one of the county’s most iconic venues.
