Braemar Lodge Residents Commemorate 80th VE Day Anniversary with Community Spirit

Residents and team members at Braemar Lodge Care Home in Salisbury embraced the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a week full of activities, memories, and celebration. The terrace room was adorned in red, white and blue for a VE Day-themed lunch and quiz, bringing the community together in honour of this important milestone.
Residents enjoyed live entertainment from the D-Day Dollies, a singing duo who performed wartime classics and created a lively, nostalgic atmosphere. The home was also honoured to welcome a Trooper from the Household Cavalry, who spent time listening to residents’ memories of 8 May 1945.
One of the residents he met was 102-year-old Ula Rigg, who served in the auxiliary fire service in Bristol and Weston-super-Mare during the war. Ula fondly recalled being hoisted onto a brick shelter and leading a singsong with her group, The Shire Spots, as crowds gathered to celebrate the end of the war.
“We sang ‘We’ll Meet Again’ and everybody joined in,” Ula said. “It was a wonderful moment to think it was all over.”
In addition to the week’s activities at our Stratford Road home, three service veterans, residents Douglas Parish and Doreen Bowell, along with Home Manager Jackie Cash, took part in the lighting of the VE Day beacon in Downton, further strengthening Braemar Lodge’s strong community links.
At Braemar Lodge, we are committed to creating meaningful moments for our residents and honouring the memories that matter most.
