A Centenary Celebration for Commander Douglas Parish at Braemar Lodge

4 September 2025

At Braemar Lodge in Salisbury, we were honoured to celebrate a remarkable milestone with one of our most inspiring residents. Commander Douglas Parish, a Royal Navy veteran of the D-Day landings, marked his 100th birthday surrounded by loved ones, friends and fellow service members.

Douglas has called Braemar Lodge home for more than two years, and his centenary was a moment to bring generations together.

Fifty-five family members, including his daughter Alison, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, joined us for a weekend of celebrations. Representatives from the Royal Naval Association, of which Douglas is a life member, also attended in uniform to pay tribute.

Highlights of the day included the presentation of a framed birthday message from the First Sea Lord, a personal note from the Admiral of the Fleet Air Arm, and a keepsake bottle of Pussers Rum – a traditional Navy gift that delighted Douglas even though he has never been a drinker. Guests looked on proudly as he cut his cake, baked by Alison, with his naval sword.

Douglas’s story is one of courage and dedication. At just 19, he was serving below decks on HMS Mauritius during the D-Day landings, witnessing the unforgettable sight of thousands of Allied vessels heading for the French coast. Among his treasured possessions today are his wartime diary and the Légion d’honneur medal, awarded to those who helped liberate France.

After the war, Douglas married his fiancée Betty, who had served with the British Red Cross during the Blitz. Together they lived in several parts of the country before settling in Salisbury. Following his naval career, Douglas retrained as a lecturer and spent 17 years teaching avionics engineering at Middle Wallop. He was also lay pastor at Porton Baptist Church and supported Salisbury Sea Cadets for many years. Betty passed away in 2017, aged 97.

Reflecting on his father’s milestone, Alison shared: “Even at 100, he’s not sitting back. He’s working on his life story and keeps his mind active every day. He has an incredible brain and a very active mind.”

The celebration was especially meaningful for two members of our team with military backgrounds of their own. Home Manager Jackie, formerly with the Princess Mary Royal Air Force Nursing Service, said: “It was a privilege to be part of such a poignant occasion. We feel very proud to support Douglas and to have shared in this extraordinary birthday.”

Douglas himself summed up the day beautifully: “I love being the patriarch of such a large family. Seeing everyone together, from the youngest to the oldest, gave me great joy.”
