Tastes of the Garden with Sarah
Our gardener Sarah offers sessions themed around the garden, and a recent activity focused on the herbs grown here.
Sarah began by talking with the residents about the history of herbs and how they can enhance the food we eat, adding a zing to our taste buds. Residents were then offered a variety of foods to sample, each with specific fresh herbs added: thyme, mint, parsley, coriander, and chives.
The offerings included water biscuits with cream cheese and herbs, cottage cheese and chives, cucumber and mint with balsamic vinegar, cherry tomatoes with basil and olive oil, and couscous with coriander and balsamic on a bed of rocket leaves. It was a cornucopia of flavours that tasted amazing!
There was also a sweet option of canapé-style pastries—mascarpone cheese in a pastry case with blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and mint. The residents discussed their favourites and reminisced about how, for some, their food growing up was quite plain. However, those who grew their own vegetables and fruit said these always tasted better.
Favourite foods from their youth included rice puddings and custards with cinnamon on top. It was a delicious and stimulating session for the senses and for reminiscing.
Thank you, Sarah, for all the work you put into this!
