Trip to Army Flying Museum

27 August 2024

Our trip began with a drive through the countryside, arriving at the Silver Plough just before our lunch booking at midday.

We had a table set aside, complete with smart linen and a lit candle. Cool drinks arrived quickly, and before too long, our food was served. The service was impeccable, and the food was delicious, albeit with rather large portions!

Once we had eaten (as much as we could manage!), we made our way back onto the bus and headed to the Army Flying Museum at Middle Wallop. Parking was easy, and navigating through the museum led us through the various stages of development, both of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, and the formation of the Corps. There were displays of aircraft, models of the original RAF Middle Wallop site during WWII, and of the individuals who had pioneered the work from its inception to the present day.

The latest aircraft on display is a Mark 1 Apache that served in Afghanistan, the newest version of which the residents saw flying while enjoying tea, coffee, and doughnuts in the café.

Memories were evoked, prompting conversations among our residents about their wartime experiences—some very sad, but others quite hilarious. After the trip, Pam said she felt quite exhausted but thoroughly enjoyed it, as did John and Diana, who thanked driver Martin for his smooth driving and assistance throughout the day.
