Douglas’ Story at Braemar Lodge

“Our history with Braemar Lodge goes back more than ten years. My father-in-law spent time here, and friends always spoke highly of it. When Dad needed respite care after my mother passed away, Braemar was our natural choice.

“I’ll never forget collecting him at the end of his stay and watching him walk out unaided – a transformation that kept him well for another five years.

“When Dad eventually needed permanent care, we visited other homes, but Braemar felt different – more like a home than a care home.

“On arrival, he was welcomed with hugs from staff members. My brother visited a week later and wrote to the family WhatsApp: ‘Wow, what a difference.’ Dad settled straight away. Staff always greet me with a smile, update me about his day, and make me feel part of the family.

“Now aged 100, Dad is thriving. He enjoys dominoes, quizzes, and lively conversations at the dining table. The Companionship Team are remarkable in tailoring activities to residents’ interests.

I’ve seen them arrange everything from seaside trips for a crab sandwich, to themed afternoons on Chile, to screenings of Under Milk Wood because of a resident’s past connection. Dad also treasures the Sunday services and communion, which reflect his faith and background as a lay pastor.

“The gardens are another joy. He’s planted sweet peas and tomatoes with the gardening club, and loves the view from his room in the new part of the home. The move was seamless, and his new space is light, spacious, and feels like his own.

“Most of all, we value the reassurance of round-the-clock nursing. Dad has had short hospital stays but is happiest at Braemar, with the nurses he knows and trusts. Weekly doctor visits and the constant clinical presence give us enormous peace of mind.

“At Braemar Lodge, Dad hasn’t just found care; he’s found community, dignity, and a renewed zest for life. At 100, he’s even busy writing his life story. We couldn’t ask for more.”
