Friendship in Focus as Canford Chase Residents Mark International Friendship Day

Residents from Canford Chase in Poole recently enjoyed a nostalgic day out in the New Forest with a trip to the renowned Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum.

Organised as part of the home’s activities programme and to mark International Friendship Day, the visit offered an opportunity to explore the rich history of motorcycling while also celebrating the bonds between residents, staff, and the wider community.

The group travelled by minibus and were welcomed by the museum team, who shared stories and insights about the remarkable collection of classic and vintage bikes on display. For many residents, the exhibits sparked memories of their younger years, with plenty of smiles and animated conversations throughout the day.

A special highlight came when the group met legendary motorcyclist and museum founder Sammy Miller himself. One resident was particularly thrilled to speak with him and share stories about his own bike — a Francis Barnett 197cc Villiers 4-speed — proudly pointing it out during the visit.

In recognition of National Friendship Day, each resident was also given a custom Canford Chase “Friendship” pen as a small token to mark the occasion.

“It was a fantastic day out, filled with connection, conversation and shared stories,” said Companionship Team Leader Vicky. “Meeting Sammy Miller was a real honour, and the museum brought back so many personal memories for our residents. Days like these are so important – they offer meaningful engagement and a real sense of joy.”
