Harvest Success
Making the most of the summer sun, we headed to the garden to harvest some of the vegetables we’ve been loving growing in our Portage.
Over the past week, we’ve enjoyed two harvests of cherry tomatoes and new potatoes. We took pleasure in seeing the fruits of our care, and most importantly, they have been lovingly added to dishes created by the home’s chefs. Residents spoke of the superior flavour of home-grown vegetables. We discussed the delay between farming and purchasing in shops, and the processes food items go through before we buy them. Reducing the time from garden to table allows more nutrients to be retained and optimises flavour.
While harvesting tomatoes, Anne mentioned that she used to enjoy visiting the farmers’ market on Saturdays to buy fresh vegetables, noting that the flavour was much better than that of supermarket produce.
This week, we’ve planted beans, Brussels sprouts, and beetroot to add to our garden as they grow. We look forward to enjoying many more vegetables from the garden.
