Wellington Boots Hanging Baskets

19 June 2024

For the Colten Village Produce show we were tasked for our summer entry in making a hanging basket.

The judging criteria for this category is overall design, range and diversity of plants, and impact and presentation, using colours, textures, and smells. Residents decided that they would like to up cycle an old pair of wellington boots for this and add plants and make it hangable. The plants that were chosen was Dianthus and Sweet Peas as not only do these look pretty in the pinks, purples and white once they have flowered, they also radiate a beautiful aroma.

The wellingtons were prepped with drainage holes made in the bottom and stones put in the bottom to help with drainage. The residents chose to cut the boots to different lengths as if they were family and were named mother and daughter by Barbara J one of our residents.

The wellington boot was filled with compost and the plants, planting them in with care. We chose to use braided garden rope as a method to hang our baskets.

Our residents seemed pleased with their master pieces, and these were hung in the garden.
