Castle View Residents Enjoy Feathered Encounter for National Owl Day

Residents at Castle View in Poundbury marked National Owl Day with a special visit from Owl Obsession, a Dorset-based organisation that offers hands-on educational sessions with birds of prey.

As part of the home’s ongoing pet therapy programme, three owls were brought in to meet residents up close — an experience that sparked smiles, conversation, and a sense of calm throughout the home.

During the visit, residents learned about each bird’s unique traits and behaviours, while several shared personal recollections of spotting owls in the wild. One resident described a moment from years ago when a Barn Owl suddenly appeared, lit up by headlights during a quiet countryside drive — a story that prompted nods of recognition from others.

Those who felt comfortable were able to gently stroke the owls and observe their intricate feather patterns and striking eyes at close range. For anyone unable to join the group session, staff ensured that the experience came to them, with one owl making room-to-room visits.

“Animal therapy can have a powerful emotional effect, especially in care settings,” said Companionship Team Leader Hayley. “The calm, gentle presence of the owls encouraged residents to engage, reminisce, and simply enjoy the moment. It was lovely to see how much the visit meant to everyone.”

Castle View has plans to continue welcoming a variety of animal visitors as part of its therapeutic activities programme. Staff say they’re already looking forward to inviting Owl Obsession back for another visit in the future.
