Majestic Visitors: A Hoot At Castle View With Owl Obsession

Owl Obsession recently visited the residents at Castle View, bringing along three fascinating owls.

The first owl introduced was Dusty, a 12-week-old Austrian Boobook. Dusty is fully grown and is sometimes called a hawk owl due to its similar behaviour. In captivity, boobooks like Dusty can live up to 25 years, though their lifespan is significantly shorter in the wild.

The second owl was Woody, an Asian Brown Wood Owl. Woody has a wingspan of 4 feet and can live up to 15 years. The largest owl of the group was Perdy, a Syrian Eagle Owl with an impressive 6-foot wingspan.

Despite being only fourteen months old, Perdy can prey on animals as large as a female roe deer. All three owls share a unique trait: they have three eyelids. Interestingly, only 40% of owl species are nocturnal.

This visit offered a rare opportunity for the residents to learn about these majestic birds up close. The handlers provided detailed insights into the owls’ behaviour, diet, and lifespan. The visit was both educational and engaging, leaving a lasting impression on everyone at Castle View.
