Fernhill Celebrates Father’s Day with Pampering, Pub Fun and Personal Touches

Residents at Fernhill, our dedicated dementia care home in Ferndown, Dorset, enjoyed a week of meaningful activities in celebration of Father’s Day, complete with pints, pampering and personalised experiences.

The week began with a nostalgic trip back in time as our in-home hair salon was transformed into a 1950s-style barbershop. Vintage posters, classic grooming products, and team members dressed in traditional striped jackets and bow ties set the scene for a relaxing pamper session. Visiting stylist Anna Parsons from Wild & Co Barbers in Parkstone treated the gentlemen to haircuts, beard trims and hand massages, all finished with warm lemon towels and moisturiser.

“It was lovely,” said resident Ronald Howes. “I enjoyed the pamper so much.” Fellow resident Robert Simpson agreed: “I’d be happy coming back here again.”

Reminiscence was a key theme throughout the week. As Anna styled, she chatted with residents about their first trips to the barbers and favourite memories of being a dad, all set to a background of hand-picked music.

Later in the week, Fernhill hosted a Men’s Club afternoon with creative flair. Residents got hands-on with paintbrushes and sandpaper, designing and decorating personalised garden plaques to display in our outdoor spaces.

No Father’s Day celebration would be complete without a trip to the pub, or the next best thing. Our team recreated a lively Fernhill Tavern with classic ales, beers, bar snacks, and even a few rounds of Subbuteo. The afternoon finished with a traditional pub singalong that brought smiles all round.

“It felt like I had gone into a real pub,” said Robert with a grin.

These themed days are just one of the ways we make life at Fernhill meaningful, joyful and familiar for those living with dementia.
