Fernhill Resident Fulfils 60-Year Wish by Joining Bournemouth Pride Parade

A long-held personal wish became reality this July when Kiki, a resident at Fernhill in Longham, joined thousands of people at the 2025 Bourne Free Pride Parade in Bournemouth — something she had hoped to experience for more than six decades.

Kiki attended the event with Companion Miezy Reynolds and Housekeeper Ali Burrett, proudly walking the parade route from East Cliff through the town centre to Meyrick Park. She was also joined by fellow Colten Care residents from Avon Cliff, who have attended the parade in previous years.

Wearing a brightly coloured, self-decorated shirt adorned with tassels, beads, a Pride logo and a hand-painted slogan, Kiki was visibly delighted to be taking part. Her shirt drew smiles, compliments, and conversation from fellow attendees along the way, while her face paint and rainbow accessories added to the celebratory spirit.

“This is the best time of my life,” she said repeatedly. “What an amazing experience I had today, I never thought I would be able to join in the parade at my age. And I never thought would I see so many people on one place. Seeing people smile and wave made my day. It was better than I could have imagined.”

Kiki and the Fernhill team danced to classic anthems, waved to onlookers and stopped to speak with members of the public — including representatives from the NHS, the Transition Rights Group and the Inclusive Community Church, all of whom shared warm words of encouragement. Drag Queen Lady Alan told Kiki: “You all look gorgeous, darlings. That’s a lovely shirt – hope to see you again next year.”

Companion Miezy said the day was full of positivity and energy. “It was fantastic to support Kiki in doing something so meaningful to her. It really showed the power of inclusion, visibility, and community connection.”

Fernhill, Colten Care’s dedicated dementia care home in Longham, supports residents in pursuing meaningful activities and experiences, with the team working to ensure individual wishes—no matter how long-standing — are heard and respected.
