Nestled in the lively village of Longham between Bournemouth and Poole, the home is bright and cheery; a place for residents to potter around and enjoy themselves.

Why you should only consider a care home dedicated to dementia:

  • Our entire team, including the professional nurses, benefit from extensive and specific dementia training
  • In our home, dementia is 'normal' and all individuals are respected
  • The companionship, activities and trips-out programme is designed specifically around those living with dementia
  • The interior and exterior environments have been carefully designed to remove the anxieties created by 'non-dementia friendly' environments
  •  Read why dedicated dementia care is a better choice than a home that mixes peoples' needs

Fiona Pritchard is our new Music and Arts Partner, a role we introduced in February 2018 to help support our homes with their music and arts activities.

Whether it be through storytelling, singing, drama, writing poetry, dance, music and movement, colour therapy, collage work, puppetry, digital art apps, or games using mime, we are now able to ensure each resident has the opportunity to explore the many ways in which music and arts can have a positive impact upon their lives and enrich their wellbeing.

Our Garden

We pride ourselves on our beautiful and stimulating gardens. We recognise that many of our residents had such gardens themselves, and that gardening may have been a special pastime for them. We like to think that we can offer residents the opportunity to continue that pastime in whatever way they feel appropriate.

Taste of Dorset Awards

We are the headline sponsor of the Taste of Dorset Awards for the seventh year running. We believe that wholesome, nutritious and well-balanced food and drink is an essential part of the care we provide. It is critical to our well-being in so many ways but should also be a pleasure in itself. With a passion for skilfully crafted and beautifully presented meals, our support for Taste of Dorset reflects our recognition of all those individuals, businesses and organisations involved in local food production.

Elaine Farrer, our Operations Director, has written an article for Nursing Times exploring how to live well with dementia:

Dementia shouldn't be a barrier to living well
Can living well with dementia actually be achieved? I know it can, but only if you allow the person to actually live with dementia.

Colten Champions

Every year, we celebrate the hard work and dedication of the team members across the Colten group who consistently deliver above and beyond expectations. Colleagues, residents, and their relatives can all put forward their nominations, before the finalists are invited to a glittering gala ceremony at Bournemouth's Highcliff Marriott Hotel, hosted by none other than TV's Dr Hilary Jones.

Caring Without Plastic

Colten Care has become the first major provider in the UK's private care home sector to begin a group-wide reduction of single-use plastic. This is a significant move given the care sector's traditionally high use of plastic in clinical services, person-centred care and infection control.

Here at Fernhill, not only are we supporting all of the central initiatives, but we are also working closely with residents and relatives to seek other ways our home can reduce our consumption of plastic. If you have any ideas or suggestions which could help us in our plastic-free drive, please do get in touch.
