A Talk and Show about the Honeybees
Our lovely carer Cheryl and her husband Tony volunteered to give us a talk all about honeybees in honour of World Bee Day.
Tony has been learning about beekeeping for around four years. He has his own allotment with two beehives that would have been destroyed if he had not taken them on. Tony explained all about the honeybees, their life in the hive, and their general life span. We also learned a lot about Queen Bees!
We watched a short video showing us how honey is made. Tony also brought in a honeycomb from one of the beehives so we could see it in real life. We were all mesmerised! Our companion Evie modelled the professional beekeeping suit, which offers good protection against bee stings. Tony also showed us the equipment needed, such as a smoker, a bee-brush, gloves, and boots. Impressively, Tony has only been stung twice in his four years as a beekeeper.
Cheryl and Tony brought in two different types of honey for residents and staff to taste. We all really enjoyed tasting the honey! This was Tony’s first visit to us, and we were so intrigued by the information he shared that we would love for him to come again soon so we can learn more about these wonderful creatures.
A big thank you from all of us at Fernhill!
