Making Nora’s Wish Come True
Today, we joined The Aldbury for a Friends of Dolphin boat trip, fulfilling a wish for Fernhill’s Nora and The Aldbury’s Valerie.
Fernhill and The Aldbury go each year with residents, enjoying the beautiful views of one of the largest natural harbours in the world, sea air, and a scrumptious picnic prepared by our chefs Martin and Izzy. The Dolphin is a charity run by volunteers from the Rotary Club of Parkstone, who provide a specially equipped boat for free pleasure trips for people with disabilities.
As we set off, Stella shared that she once sailed for six days from Lagos to Liverpool, and she was the only one up on deck as all the other passengers were seasick. Nora expressed her love for being on a boat, saying, “This is just lovely; I love being on the water.” Anne agreed, “It is very pleasant, the nice sea air.”
Our fabulous volunteer told us about Balls Lake, named because pirates used to fire cannonballs towards Henry VIII’s Castle, which fishers would sometimes find in their nets. He then mentioned the next islands, referred to as the BFG’s: Brownsea, Furzey, and Green Island. The skipper informed us that if he shouts ‘wake’ or ‘wave’, it means we are about to rock about on the waves from the wash of a passing boat.
During one of these washes, Stella’s hat went flying over the stern towards the engine, but Karen, our bus driver, managed to save it. “That was lucky,” Kiki laughed. “Fabulous catch!”
We had such a wonderful day out, enjoying a lovely breeze during this hot weather. Kiki thanked all the companions and volunteers as we disembarked, saying, “I can’t thank you enough. That was fabulous.” Nora and Val agreed, “Wish come true!” exclaimed Val!”
