Kingfishers residents soar through aviation history
Residents from Kingfishers enjoyed a day of discovery and reflection during a recent visit to the Solent Sky Museum in Southampton, a venue renowned for celebrating the region’s aviation heritage.
Escorted by members of the Companionship Team, five residents spent the day exploring the museum’s impressive collection of aircraft, including 20 historic planes and exhibits highlighting Southampton’s pivotal role in the development of the iconic Spitfire.
The outing offered more than just a glimpse into aviation history. The group also had the opportunity to visit the adjoining fire and police museums, adding further intrigue to the trip. The day proved to be both educational and deeply moving for some, including resident Ann, who was particularly touched by the wartime displays.
Ann’s father was tragically killed during the Second World War when his aircraft was shot down, and the visit brought poignant memories of that time to the fore. Reflecting on the visit to the museum, she said: “We’ve seen amazing displays and incredible creations, bringing back poignant memories.”
After the museum visit, the group made the most of the sunny spring weather with a picnic lunch at Ocean Village, enjoying the waterfront views and relaxed atmosphere. To round off the day, the residents stopped in Lyndhurst for an ice cream – a refreshing treat and a perfect ending to an outing filled with learning, remembrance and companionship.
Companionship Team Leader Rose Arcanella said: “Trips such as these are not only enjoyable but important for residents, offering the chance to engage with personal history and explore new surroundings in good company. Plans are already in motion for more adventures over the summer months.”
