Birthday outing unearths joy for former archaeologist

Linden Care Home in Lymington has once again demonstrated the power of person-centred care by organising a truly meaningful experience for one of its residents, combining thoughtful planning with a shared passion for history.

Resident Martin Straw, a former archaeologist, enjoyed a birthday outing to the St Barbe Museum in Lymington, where he explored a new exhibition of aerial photographs showcasing ancient sites across Britain.

The trip was arranged by Companion Phil, who had discovered his lifelong interest in archaeology — an area in which Martin once worked professionally, including on the ancient walls of Southampton. The two often discuss archaeological news, keeping Martin engaged with the subject he loves.

When Phil learned of the exhibition by photographer David R. Abram, whose drone images bring ancient landscapes vividly to life, he immediately recognised it as the perfect opportunity for Martin to reconnect with his passion.

The pair spent the morning at the museum, where they took in the striking images and shared discussion about the historical significance of the sites. The visit was made all the more poignant as it fell on Martin’s birthday, offering a deeply personal and memorable way to celebrate.

Martin’s wife, Helen, later sent her thanks in a heartfelt email to the home:

“I would like to thank everyone involved in arranging for Martin to go with Phil to the exhibition at St Barbe Museum. This is something he would have done before he was ill, so I know he really appreciated it. Phil was a very suitable companion who helped Martin fully engage with and enjoy the exhibition.
