Lighting Of The Angel Candle And The Christ Candle On Christmas Eve

On this special Christmas Eve, we observed the fourth Sunday in Advent, marking the culmination of our anticipation for the joyous occasion.

As part of our hymns and praise, we lit the third purple candle, also known as the Angel Candle, symbolising peace.

Additionally, in celebration of Christmas Eve, we lit the central white candle, known as the Christ Candle, representing the arrival of Christ into the world, with the colour white symbolising purity.

Our service was adorned with meaningful readings, resonant Christmas carols, including a special Advent Carol set to the familiar tune of “Away in a Manger,” and a heartfelt Christmas prayer.

The lighting of the Advent Wreath, a tradition dating back to 16th Century Germany among Lutherans and Catholics, added a symbolic touch to our spiritual preparations.

The Advent Wreath, a circular garland of evergreen branches representing eternity, features five candles—three purple, one pink, and one white.

The three purple candles symbolise different aspects of our spiritual journey in preparation for Christ’s coming, while the pink candle represents joy.

The fifth and central white candle, ignited on this Christmas Eve, symbolises the arrival of the much-anticipated Christmas, signifying hope, purity, and the culmination of the Advent season.
