Lighting The Bethlehem Candle On the Second Sunday In Advent!

10 December 2023

Some traditions call this the Bethlehem Candle as it symbolizes Christ’s Manger.

During our service, we enjoyed singing the Advent Carol to the well-known and popular tune of “Away in a Manger,” and yes, without music and in tune!

The lighting of the Advent Wreath is a custom that began in 16th-century Germany among the Lutherans and Catholics.

In Western Christianity, Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day.

The Advent Wreath is a circular garland of evergreen branches, representing eternity.

On the wreath are five candles: three purple, one pink, and one white.

Each candle represents an aspect of spiritual preparation for the coming of Christ.

Tradition states that the four candles represent the four weeks and each stands for 1,000 years, totalling 4,000 years from the time of Adam and Eve until the birth of Christ.
