Tour de Aldbury hits 100K target in charity challenge
Residents and staff at The Aldbury care home have taken on an ambitious cycling challenge to mark World Bicycle Day – and pedalled their way to success, raising £100 for local charity PramaLife in the process.
Dubbed the Tour de Aldbury, the event saw participants collectively cycle 100 kilometres on static bikes over the course of one day. The effort was part of a wider initiative to promote sustainable travel, encourage physical activity, and unite the home in a common goal.
The day began with a group warm-up led by Companion Melissa Siat, who helped residents prepare for the task ahead.
“It was fantastic to see so many people get involved and push themselves, all in the spirit of doing something good for the environment and for charity,” said Melissa. “The energy and enthusiasm were truly inspiring.”
While staff were encouraged to cycle into work to reduce their carbon footprint, those inside the home turned to static bikes to clock up the kilometres. Star cyclist Iris, joined by her son John, made a significant contribution early in the day. Others followed suit, including residents using both arms and legs to pedal where possible.
In one of the more unique moments, hairdresser Candy managed to cycle a mile while giving Iris a perm – demonstrating both creativity and commitment to the cause.
Housekeeping Manager Kanya Brannon also joined in while visiting the salon, and Home Manager Victoria Smith, along with Nurse Aimee, added the final miles to the tally.
Fittingly, the challenge concluded in the home manager’s office during a meeting with a resident’s family member, Steve Selway – the last few kilometres recorded with the help of a desk-side bike.
By the end of the day, the team had reached their 100K goal and raised £100 for PramaLife, a charity dedicated to supporting older people and carers across Dorset.
“It’s been a brilliant example of how person-centred care and a sense of community can come together for something fun and meaningful,” added Melissa. “We’re so proud of everyone who took part – every pedal made a difference.”
