Dementia Action Week is an awareness raising campaign, run by the Alzheimer’s Society each year, encouraging individuals and organisations across the UK to encourage people to act on dementia.
From the 13th to 17th May, The Aldbury dedicated dementia home will be hosting activities, talks, interactive sessions, musical entertainment, and much more.
We aim to encourage our residents, families, friends, and the local community, especially those living with dementia, to learn how we can live well with dementia by connecting with the world around us.
Each day, our doors will be open to visitors from 10 am to 4 pm, with structured sessions at 11 am and 2 pm each day if there is something specific you or someone you care for would like to attend.
There will be the option to make donations and purchase crafts and gifts during the week – all donations will be split between The Alzheimer’s Society and our chosen charity this year, Wildlife in Need.
Our companionship teams at the home are pivotal in creating, guiding, and running meaningful activities. Many of our sessions involve arts and crafts, designed to inspire those living with dementia to explore their creativity, acquire new skills, and, above all, enjoy themselves.
11 am & 2 pm – art-based activity sessions including Forget-Me-Not pebble painting.
Music plays an important role in our dementia care homes, as its connection to memory and wellbeing is incredibly powerful.
We are fortunate to have strong links with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and they regularly visit our homes to perform for our residents.
At Colten Care, Fiona Pritchard is our dedicated Music & Arts Partner. Fiona, a trained musician from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, brings a wealth of experience as both a teacher and performer, as well as a talent for composing and song writing.

This can stimulate senses and evoke memories, all contributing to overall well-being.

10.30am – Wildlife in Nature will be bringing our feathered friends Rosemary, Thyme, and Lavender to visit!
Martin Corrigan, the Home Manager at The Aldbury and Victoria Smith. our Clinical Lead have a wealth of experience in dementia care. Between 10 am and 4 pm, there will be opportunities to meet with both Martin and Victoria. They can provide valuable information about the home and guide families through the journey into care.
Kay Gibson is our Admiral Nurse; a specialist dementia care nurse, working in partnership with the charity Dementia UK, giving expert practical, clinical and emotional support to families facing the challenges of dementia.

Over time, dementia can change an individual’s hearing, sight, taste, smell, and sense of touch. Each person’s experience will be different, so it’s hard to predict what the sensory changes someone with dementia will experience.
11 am & 2 pm – Smell, Taste, Touch, Hear, See – through interactive sessions, discover first-hand how senses may be affected, and how connecting with the senses we still possess can greatly enhance the quality of life.
Parking at our home is reserved for visitors, but spaces are limited. If you find our car park to be full, alternative parking is available on Alderney Avenue, Manor Avenue, Jersey Road, Bedford Road or Dolbery Road. Please come to reception on arrival, where you will be asked to sign in.
The home is located next to Alderney Hospital in Parkstone, just 10 minutes drive from the centre of Poole.
